CHAPTER TWELVE

THE SO-CALLED HIDEOUT they entered was a small, musty building that looked like it had not been lived in, or used at all, for quite some time; Clara said she had only been there less than a fortnight. It was not lost on Jordun that most homes that remained empty were because their previous occupants had died in the war.

The first thing Jordun asked when they got inside was what guild she was talking about. Guilds of many kinds existed to bring together crafters, fighters, or any number of other disciplines. Master Andeer had rejected invites from the Guild of Smiths a number of times, though he never really said why.

A chill tingled his spine when he thought about the old blacksmith. If they had all been spotted together when they entered, maybe the marshal never let him leave the castle. And if he was free, what would he return to find? An abandoned wagon full of goods, a missing horse, and a number of dead soldiers strewn about the place instead of potential customers.

Jordun knew the situation wasn’t his fault, but that didn’t prevent the guilt from seeping in. He used to be a nobody, and before May got taken, she had been enjoying her ordinary life too. Now they were fugitives on the run from a corrupt lord and his rabid dogs, and they didn’t even know why they were targets. Or at least, they didn’t know why May was a target. Jordun had painted a bullseye on his own back by choosing to ally with her, and it was a decision he would make a thousand times over. That day on the beach was perhaps the most important day of his entire life, and he wouldn’t change a thing about it – except maybe for cutting his head when he ran into a wooden beam while fleeing from an old woman.

“The Mages Guild,” Clara said after a moment of hesitation. Even though she spoke only a few brief words, she presented every syllable as if it carried a heavy meaning. Jordun was just glad that she answered his question and rescued him from his spiralling thoughts. “I told you that something weird is happening here in Brythar, but the truth is a lot bigger than that.”

“The Mages Guild?" May asked, the scepticism in her voice thinly veiled. The timid elf girl nodded solemnly. May exhaled deeply, sweeping some hair out of her eyes. “You're being serious.”

“Forgive me,” Jordun said, scratching his chin as he watched May's expression, "but why is that so unbelievable? I've heard of the Mages Guild, but why is it so special?

May arched her eyebrows at him. “Whatever you've heard, it's probably not enough. They're not like your run of the mill trading or adventurers guilds. They’re pretty secretive, and they make it their business to know everybody else's secrets.”

As he glanced over at Clara, he noticed that she was staring at the floor with her eyes slightly narrowed, almost as if she was embarrassed somehow.
